Part of the *Deviant: Women, Sex & the Monstrous* Erotic exhibition and publication in collaboration with writer Tracy Heather Johnson, *Kanamara Matsuri* is a bold exploration of the vagina dentata myth and a reversal of the possessed woman trope. Inspired by Tracy’s writing, this piece interrogates the enduring idea that demonic possession would manifest in a woman’s sexuality—an ancient fear still echoed in horror and mythology.
The figure writhes in defiant ecstasy, her arched back and parted lips evoking the cinematic language of possession—sexuality twisted into something monstrous. Yet, here, the monstrosity is reclaimed. The composition deliberately obscures what lies between her legs, allowing the viewer’s imagination to be guided by Tracy’s words. The elements of nature entwining her body suggest both fertility and danger, a sacred eroticism that resists control.
Rendered in fluid, organic detail, *Kanamara Matsuri* challenges the viewer to reconsider who is truly in possession of this body—and what power lies in the refusal to be contained.
